Karaoke

Part of the fun of watching a karaoke show or evening is having a good laugh at the people who sound terrible – they guys you wish never got hold of that microphone. But even better, is when you hear someone (unexpectedly) sing really well.

If you want to polish your karaoke performance, then read on. Here are some basic, but essential tips to ensure that you sound like a professional the next time you perform karaoke.

1. Practice, practice, practice – choose a song (or a selection of songs) that you really want to sing and practice singing them at every chance that you get. Nothing beats practice. Music is not as simple as it sounds, and getting your singing up to scratch means knowing your song inside and out. Listen to your song (or songs) whenever you can and practice singing them as often as possible (yes, even in the shower!) Which leads to the next point,

2. Timing – make sure you know the timing of your song well. Many a good voice has fallen to the wayside thanks to poor timing. Poor timing is instantly recognizable and once you’ve lost your place, the rest is usually a mess.

3. Drop your insecurities and sing out loud – Don’t worry about what the crowd is thinking. Karaoke is supposed to be fun and outrageous. There’s no need to be perfect, so be yourself and sing out!

4. Use the microphone correctly – You want to make sure that you’re as close up to the microphone as is possible (and comfortable). The further you distance yourself from the microphone, the softer and thinner your voice will sound. Therefore, to get the best sound, get up close to the mic and sing out loud. Remember that the microphone only reproduces what it “hears” – so give it your best.

5. Keep a glass of water (or any liquid substance… err..) near – Clear your throat with some water to make the task of singing easier. The more lubricated your throat is, the better.

6. Relax – There’s no turning back once you’re on stage. So relax your muscles, loosen up and show them what you’ve got. An nervousness or tenseness will show up in your voice immediately, so learn to relax.

Keep these tips in mind, practice as often as possible, and you’re sure to be sounding like a karaoke pro in no time – Good luck!
