3Prodigy FX Doesn’t Live Up To Hype
By Gregory E. Love
I bought a Prodigy FX from Guitar Center in November, 2007. One month later at a gig, the right cd player jammed. Tried everything to eject the cd. It wouldn’t eject. Had to finish the gig with only half of the unit working (On pins and needles the rest of the gig). Returned it to Guitar Center and no one there could get the unit to eject the cd either. They immediately gave me another brand new Prodigy FX. In 2008, the same thing happened again. The unit also developed an electrical short in the receptacle connector that connects to the power cord. In 2009, I bought a Prodigy, the cheaper version of the Prodigy FX. The right cd player jammed on the first day I used it. Apparently B-52 knew ahead of time that these units would have problems with cd’s jamming the cd players. This is why there is a stated procedure for ejecting a jammed cd; however, this procedure doesn’t always remedy the situation. This is a very attractive looking piece of equipment and it really looks professional. It’s loaded with a tremendous amount of features that should have had this as one of the most desirable cd player/mixers on the market. I liked the track finder which could locate a track in a matter of seconds (even on MP3 cd’s with over 120 tracks (songs). There were connections for several mic’s and separate volume controls for a mic with effects. The unit also comes with an ATA travel case. In spite of all this, I was surprised that B-52 with its reputation in the music industry, would put an unproven product with so many problems on the market as the Prodigy FX. Sometimes a disc reader would read a disc and at a later time display “disc error” (same cd) and would not play the cd. Personally and presently, I would not recommend this unit to anyone to buy. I certainly would not recommend this to another DJ or anyone considering working as a DJ. The Prodigy FX is not reliable and is not a unit that would inspire confidence in a DJ. With its appealing looks and number of special features, this could have been a hell of a piece of equipment; a unit that DJ’s would be clamoring for. As it is, it’s highly overpriced and the quality and value that a DJ would expect is just not in this product. I now use an Apple computer, a Denon 1500 mixer, and a Denon HS5500 media controller and player. Though I have gone digital, if B-52 were to get all the bugs out of the Prodigy FX (and I do mean ALL the bugs), I would buy another Prodigy FX in a heartbeat. As for the Prodigy, the cheaper version of the Prodigy FX, I wouldn’t recommend it either. It has fewer features than the FX does. One of the features that is missing are the LED indicators that would alert a DJ when clipping is taking place. The Prodigy FX could have taken DJing to another level instead of having DJ’s wondering what it could/should have been like to use a cd player/mixer like this one. Don’t waste your money on a Prodigy FX. As this unit is, it’s worth $400.00 at the most. If manufacturers such as B-52 want us to support them, make them deliver a quality product. You do this when you refuse to buy inferior products that manufacturers put on the market. If you’re still considering buying a Prodigy FX for gigs, buy a backup cd player to carry with you; particularly on those gigs where your reputation is on the line! My Prodigy & Prodigy FX are going to be traded in on other DJ equipment in the very near future.

5The Best ‘All in One DJ Solution”, for the price.
By Warren Sankar
I bought this unit the first time I saw it at Guitar Center. It is very easy to use straight out of the box. I was impressed with the MP3 playback, effects, sound and appearance of the unit. Every button or knob is there for a reason and can be used while playing or mixing music. The “Accutrak Faders” is the best I ever used so far, “If your song is a little off beat before crossfading, the Accutrak Fader” picks up the slack and blends your mix perfectly. I rate it over past mixers I’ve had like the Behringer VMX 1000, Numark (Can’t remember the model)and any Gemini to list a few. I used this unit with M-Audio Torq and it works fine. I like its ability to interact with DJ software. If you are a mobile DJ, all you need is this unit, a mic, a pair of powered speakers with a sub-woofer, your cd’s or laptop with an external drive and you’re ready to rock any party. It comes with a very good flight case that protects the unit and can be dragged from gig to gig. I must say that I am happy with my purchase and would recommend this unit to anyone entering the DJ industry for the first time, or even as a professional.
